How to Write an Amount in Words for Cheques and Invoices
Published 28 October 2026 by Adawat
Cheques, invoices and contracts often need the amount written in words as well as in figures. The two must match exactly, or the document can be rejected.
The basic rule
Write the whole number first, then the currency, then any smaller unit. For example, 1,250.50 riyals can be written as: one thousand two hundred fifty riyals and fifty halalas.
Common mistakes
- Words and figures that do not match.
- Leaving a gap in the line where someone could add words.
- Forgetting the smaller unit, such as halalas or fils.
Use the tool
- Open the Amount to words tool.
- Enter the amount.
- Copy the words and compare them with your figures.
Banks and companies may have their own rules, so check theirs before you rely on the result.
