How to Make a Passport-Size Photo at Home
Published 24 October 2026 by Adawat
A passport or ID photo made at home can save a trip to a studio, as long as it meets the rules of the office you are applying to.
Before you take the photo
- Stand in front of a plain, light background and use soft, even light from the front, without shadows on the face or wall.
- Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and your eyes open.
- Hold the camera at eye level from about arm's length, or ask someone to take it for you.
Make the print sheet
- Open the Passport photo tool and choose your photo.
- Pick a size: 35 x 45 mm, 40 x 60 mm or 51 x 51 mm (2 x 2 inches).
- Adjust zoom and position until the face is centred.
- Save the single photo or the 4x6 inch sheet and print it at a photo shop, or on photo paper at 100 percent scale.
Check the rules first
Required size, head height, background colour and whether glasses are allowed differ by country and document. Always read the official guidance. The tool crops and lays out the photo, but it cannot tell you whether the photo will be accepted.
