How to Calculate Zakat on Savings, Gold and Business Goods

Published 24 October 2026 by Adawat

Zakat is a yearly obligation on eligible wealth that stays above a minimum amount called the nisab. This guide explains the common method. For your own situation, please ask a qualified scholar.

The basic method

The nisab

Many scholars use the value of 85 grams of gold. Some use 595 grams of silver, which gives a lower threshold. Gold prices change every day, so check today's price in your own currency.

Example (numbers are for illustration only)

Savings 40,000, gold 10,000 and trade goods 20,000 add up to 70,000. After subtracting 5,000 of debts due now, the net is 65,000. If the nisab is 25,000 in your currency, the net is above it, so zakat is 2.5 percent of 65,000, which is 1,625.

Use the calculator

Open the Zakat calculator, enter each amount, then enter the nisab in your currency. It shows whether zakat is due and the estimate. Scholars differ on some items, such as jewellery for personal use, shares and property, so confirm those with a scholar.
